What to Include in a Home Emergency Kit

November 25, 2022

A home can turn into a dangerous environment in the absence of its inhabitants. Home invaders can slip in and steal your valuables while you’re away, and may even destroy the remainder in the process.

If you have children at home, they could get into things they shouldn’t or try doing something they shouldn’t.

That’s why it’s best to have a home emergency kit in place when you need to leave your home, even for a short time. The emergency kit can protect your property and your loved ones.

Keep reading to learn more about how to start making a home emergency kit.

Supplies for a Power Outage

A home emergency kit should include supplies for a power outage. These supplies can include flashlights, batteries, and a radio. Candles and matches can also be helpful. It is important to have a plan for what to do during a power outage.

This plan should include having a backup source of power, such as a generator.

Non-perishable Food and Water

When preparing, it is important to include nonperishable food and water. This will ensure that you and your family have access to sustenance in the event of an emergency.

Nonperishable food items can include canned goods, dry goods, and snacks that do not require refrigeration. It is important to have a variety of food items so that everyone’s needs can be met.

Water is also crucial in an emergency situation.

A minimum of one gallon of water per person per day is advised. You may want to have water tanks for sale. It is a stackable water container with a spigot for emergency preparedness.

Having a home disaster kit with nonperishable food and water will help you be prepared for anything.

Sanitation and Personal Hygiene

This is especially important if you may be without running water or electricity for an extended period of time.

Items to include are toilet paper, paper towels, wipes, hand sanitizer, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, and feminine hygiene products. If you have small children, don’t forget to pack diapers and wipes. A modest first-aid kit is a smart addition as well.

First-Aid Supplies

Your home emergency supplies should include a variety of first aid supplies to help you respond to any type of emergency. Bandages, gauze, and tape are essential for treating cuts and scrapes.

Antiseptic wipes and ointments can help prevent infection. Pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help reduce pain and swelling.

A thermometer can help you monitor fever. And, if you have any allergies, be sure to include an epinephrine auto-injector. With these supplies on hand, you’ll be prepared to handle any minor medical emergency.

Build the Perfect Home Emergency Kit for Your Disaster Preparedness

There are certain items that are essential for any home emergency kit. These include water, food, first-aid supplies, a flashlight, and batteries.

It is also important to have a plan in place in case of a catastrophe. Knowing what to do and where to go can help you stay safe in the event of a disaster.
