How to build a skincare routine?

October 19, 2022

Are you new to skincare? Already have a routine in place but want to switch to natural products? Do you want to change things up for the new season?

Whatever your reason for returning to the skincare drawing board, selecting new products and developing a routine can be daunting-where do you even begin?

We’ve created this Skincare tutorial to answer your most frequently asked questions in order to take the guesswork out of developing your new routine.

What skin type do you have?

The first step in creating the best routine for your skin is determining what it requires. The ideal skincare routine is one that focuses on your skin’s long-term health—a routine that works to balance the function of your skin and regulate it so that it is neither oily or dry.

What skincare items do you require?

The needs of each individual’s skin will differ, but there are some basic products that everyone can benefit from using on a daily basis:

  • Cleanser
  • An Organic face mask
  • Oil or serum
  • Moisturiser
  • SPF

The specific cleansers, serums, oils, and moisturisers you choose will be determined by your skin type, so remember to refer back to point 1 if you’re unsure what your skin requires!

You may also benefit from using the following products on a daily basis, depending on your skin type and lifestyle:

  • Oil cleanser/makeup remover (for evening use if you wear makeup daily)
  • Toner (if your skin is particularly oily, either all over or in specific areas)
  • Cream for the eyes (non-negotiable for those with mature skin, but a great idea to start early as a preventative aging treatment)
  • Spot/blemish removal (great to have on hand if you are prone to breakouts)

Most skin types can benefit from the following products when used twice a week:

  • Exfoliant
  • Mask

Again, the specific exfoliants and masques you select will be determined by your skin type, so use these products to truly tailor your routine to your specific skin needs.

How should you apply your skincare products?

Before diving into the exact sequence for applying your skincare products morning and night, remember this general rule: start with the thinnest, most liquid consistency and gradually move to thicker products. Always begin with cleansing and makeup removal to ensure your skin is clean and ready to absorb subsequent products effectively. Following this approach, as outlined in the Nu Skin review, can help you achieve the best results in your skincare routine.

It is also important to wait a minute before proceeding to the next step to allow your skin to absorb all of the benefits!

To make things easier, here’s how you should go about your new daily skincare routine.

Morning:

  • Cleanse
  • Use Toner (optional)
  • Use a serum or oil
  • Use eye cream
  • Moisturize
  • Put on your sunscreen
  • Makeup (if wearing)

Evening:

  • Makeup should be removed (optional)
  • Exfoliate (twice weekly)
  • Mask (twice weekly)
  • Use Toner (optional)
  • Use a serum or oil
  • Use eye cream
  • Moisturize your skin or use a richer night cream
  • Use spot treatment as needed
